Ever wondered how to add gorgeous texture to your crafts? Stylish embossing is something you can achieve at home, with just a few crafty essentials! Embossed designs are produced using your favourite stamps (or hand drawn designs, if you’re feeling super-creative!), plus a special ink, and special powder. Once the designs are stamped in the ink, the area is covered with embossing powder, which melts when heated to create a wonderfully embossed finish! It’s a great technique utilised by papercrafters everywhere. Want to learn more on how you too can achieve incredible embossing results? Heat embossing is a classic stamping technique—it’s a fabulous way to add style, colour and dimension to your cards!
YOU WILL NEED:
Stamp Set
Embossing Ink
Embossing powders
Heat tool
Non – Stick Crafting Sheet 40 cm x 30 cm
LET’S LOOK AT THE BASIC PROCESS:
STEP 1:
Ink your stamp with embossing ink, then stamp onto cardstock. (Here, I’m using the Stamparatus.)
Tip! You can use embossing ink, or pigment stamping ink—both are slow-drying. Dye based ink or solvent ink will dry too quickly for you to emboss.
STEP 2:
Lift the stamp off. Place the stamped piece onto scrap paper or a Clean and Tidy Tray. Immediately sprinkle embossing powder onto the image. You’ll want to work quickly, while the ink is still wet. You can be generous with the embossing powder!
STEP 3:
Tap off the excess embossing powder.
STEP 4:
Return the excess powder to the jar.
Tip! Always cap the jar of powder before turning on the heat tool to avoid powder blowing everywhere!
STEP 5:
Use a dry fine-tip paintbrush to brush away any stray particles around your image.
STEP 6:
Use a heat tool to melt the embossing powder: Place the stamped piece onto a heat-resistant surface like a glass mat or craft sheet, then move the heat slowly over the embossed piece. You’ll see the powder melting and becoming raised and shiny. Take care not to overheat the piece.
Tip! Turn the embossing tool on, then off a few times to warm it up before using it on your project.
EMBOSSING DESIGN IDEAS:
EMBOSSING AS A RESIST…
The raised edges of your embossed design provide a resist to any wet medium you use for colour. Here, I’ve embossed with gold, then coloured in the image with Ink and a Aqua Painters.
STEP 1:
Make a watery wash of ink to create a base colour.
STEP 2:
Then add more dimension with a darker colour ink. You can spritz with water to get a beautifully blended look!
DOUBLE EMBOSSING…
With layering stamps, you can create a double-embossed effect. Simply emboss one layer with one colour, then do the second layer with another powder. As with most layered stamp techniques, this one is best done with a stamp positioner.
STEP 1:
Stamp and emboss with one colour.
STEP 2:
Line up the coordinating image, then stamp and emboss with a second colour.
EDGE EMBOSSING…
This technique gives you beautifully embossed edges for a polished look!
STEP 1:
Ink the edge of your cardstock with embossing ink.
STEP 2:
Dip the edge of the cardstock into the embossing powder.
Tap off any excess, then heat set.
ANY MORE TIPS?
Just one… Please be sure to unplug the heat tool before leaving the room! Heat tools can get produce very hot temperatures and should not be left unattended while plugged in.
